About This Item

EDINBURGH: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1840 A good copy of the scarcer second volume of Dogs in the original publisher's cloth binding. This volume covers the domestic breeds of dog (as well as some feral) and has additional plates because some were omitted from Dogs Vol I. With 36 hand coloured plates and 4 plain plates. With volume listing; half title; frontispiece portrait of Don Felix D'Azara; black and white vignette title page with portrait of 'Fury'; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; note of additional contents to be added to Vol 26 in the series (Bees); errata note for Bees; Memoir; text; errata; note on plates omitted from Vol I; and plates bound at the rear. The plates number to 31 but there is a 15*, 18*, 21*, 22* and 23*. The binding is complete and clean. The spine and board edges are faded with general scuffing to the board cloth. There is pulling to spine ends, with some fraying at the top which extends to spine joints where the cloth is thin. Corners turned with light wear. The original green endpapers are present and are clean. Contents are clean - text pages are lightly toned towards the edges; plates are very clean - again with some toning at the edges. Tissue guards with occasional marking - one loose with damaged side edge. The stitching is wobbly in the text block, but holding. The plates are stitched in groups (presumably reflecting the original parts in which they were sold) and the stitching is visible between the groups.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
