EDINBURGH: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1840 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding. With volume listing; half title; engraved black and white frontispiece portrait of Salvianus; vignette title page with black and white illustration of seabirds and a sea monster; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Hippolito Salviani; text including numerous black and white illustrations; 32 hand coloured plates bound at the rear; and a 4 page publisher's catalogue. The original cloth binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is sound and tight. It is very clean with a couple of slightly lighter areas on the front board. The top front corner has a very small bump; the other corners have light wear. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. There is an old bookplate of Charlotte Fox to the front pastedown. Internally the text is largely unopened and is lightly toned. There is some brown marking across pp 112/113. The plates are bright and clean with general offsetting to tissue guards. Plate 10 has a very spotty guard. The plates are numbered to 31 - there being 2 different versions of plate 27. There is a paper repair to the top edge of the rear free endpaper.
