With volume listing; half title; engraved black and white frontispiece portrait of Salvianus; vignette title page with black and white illustration of seabirds and a sea monster; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Hippolito Salviani; text including numerous black and white illustrations; 32 hand coloured plates bound at the rear; and a 4 page publisher's catalogue. The original cloth binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is sound and tight. It is very clean with bright gilt titles to the spine. There is a slightly faded area towards the edge of the front board. Corners have light wear. There is a slight indentation to the bottom edge of back board close to the spine. EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1840 A good copy of the 1st edition in contemporary half leather binding, with 32 hand coloured plates. Contents: half title, engraved black and white frontispiece portrait of Salvianus; vignette title page with black and white illustration of seabirds and a sea monster; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Hippolito Salviani; text including numerous black and white illustrations; 32 hand coloured plates bound at the rear (numbered to 31, but with 2 versions of plate 27). The binding is in good clean condition: the black leather spine has gilt lined raised bands and compartments with blind stamped cross hatch design. Title labels are missing. The maroon cloth is clean with some fading at edges. There is some wear at the spine joints and the bottom corners are bumped. A little edge wear. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of Sidney Wentworth to the front pastedown, and the signature of A Shafto Barthropp to the fep. The text and plates are in very good clean condition with some offsetting to tissue guards. There is occasional light brown spotting visible at page edges, and particularly at the rear endpapers and final tissue guards - a couple of plates have a single pale spot towards the plate edge.
