Edinburgh: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1837 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the publisher's cloth binding with 30 hand coloured plates. Contents with volume listing for the Naturalist's Library; half title; black and white frontispiece of Lamarck; hand coloured vignette title page of butterflies and a lizard; 2 further title pages; publisher's advertisement dated 1 June 1837; contents listing; Memoir of Lamarck; text with 30 colour plates bound in - plate 1 is double size; and 23pp publisher's catalogue at the rear. The binding has been expertly rebacked and is sound and tight. The spine and board edges are lightly faded. There is a small mark on the spine and light wear to corners. The original green endpapers are present with repair at the joints and slight damage to front pastedown at the joint. The contents are very bright and clean with well coloured plates. There is a lot of offsetting to tissue guards.

Edinburgh: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1835 A fair copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In newer cloth binding with the original gilt titles pasted to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text 246 pp; and 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates at the rear. The binding is a plain blue cloth which is clean and has turned corners. There is a decorative bookplate at the front pastedown endpaper and a bookseller's label on the fep. Internally the usual preliminaries (eg volume listing, half title) are missing, as is the publisher's listing from the rear. EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1835 A good copy of the 1st edition in contemporary half morocco leather binding with marbled paper sides. With black and white frontispiece portrait of John Ray; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; inserted small slip; contents listing; publisher's advert; Memoir of Ray; text with numerous illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. There is the remains of an old page marker. The spine has small raised bands and gilt titles. There is rubbing to spine ends and joints but no splitting at the joints. The corners have wear with some surface loss at the front bottom corner. Endpapers are marbled. There is a pencil signature to the verso of the frontispiece. Contents are clean with some toning to text and some plates. Page 30 has a repaired bottom edge tear and there is the occasional crease to text corner tipis. Some plates lack guards and the guard to plate 25 is detaching.

With listing of the Naturalist's Library; black and white engraved frontispiece of Latreille; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; an advert; contents listing; Memoir of Latreille; text; 2 black and white plates relating to Latreille; and 30 further plates of which 29 are hand coloured and one is double size. The binding has had an expert cloth case repair relaying the spine and is therefore sound and tight. There is some fading to the spine and board edges. The original green endpapers are present with repair to joints. The contents are very clean with well coloured plates. Light toning to page edges.
