About This Item

EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1842 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding, with 34 hand coloured plates of birds including herons and storks. With volume listing; title page; frontispiece portrait of Rev Dr Walker; hand coloured vignette title page showing a spaniel and a heron; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Dr Walker; and text with black and white illustrations and 34 hand coloured plates. The binding has been rebacked to preserve most of the original spine, and the end papers repaired and retained. Some of the contents have been restitched making the contents sound and tight. The binding has fading to spine and board edges and a little marking on the boards. The corners are bumped. The end papers have some creasing. The text pages are generally clean - some page edges have been turned over right at the corner. All the plates are tissue-guarded and the guards have some brown spotting. There is the occasional spot on the plates - generally to the margin, not affecting the bird. This is most noticeable on plates 15-18 and on the frontispiece and vignette title page. The plate paper has brown toning to edges (common with this work). The plates are nicely coloured.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
