About This Item

G.B. Paravia, Torino: 1942., 1942 154 p. + Illustrations. Italian text. 12 mo. 195 mm. Original illustrated paper wraps binding. Very good. Manuscript ownership inscription of: "Ralph S. (Spencer Walker) Lt (jg) U.S.N.R. 12/31/45." Probably bought when he was in Palermo with the U.S. Navy. An account in Italian of the Second German North polar Expedition (1869-1870) and it's second ship: schooner-brig "Hansa" - a coal tender under Captain Hegemann. Leaving Bremerhaven with the main ship "Germania", in 1869, the general task was exploration of the region north of 74o at the eastern coast of Greenland. The ships are separated forever in foggy weather on July 20. In September 1869 the "Hansa" is locked in the pack-ice at 73o 25,7' N - drifting south. By October the ship is heavily damaged by the ice-pressure, and sinks 10 km off the east coast of Greenland at 70o 52'N 21o W. The crew of 14 escaped to a southward drifting ice floe and spends the Polar winter on it. In May the floe breaks up and the journey is continued in small boats. In June, after a drift of about 2000 km in 237 days they reach a Herrnhuter missionary station Friedrichsthal (southern Greenland ) - all are rescued. It is a remarkable tale , and one of the least known of the many thrilling stories of polar adventure. POLAR 2 0.0. Soft cover.
