About This Item

Tokyo: Kobunsha, 1885. Near fine. This is the first issue, on plain paper, with only the phonetic Japanese title on the front wrapper and the English title in the publisher's colophon on the verso. Rare thus. It became No.6 in Hasegawa's Japanese Fairy Tale Series, printed on crepe paper, with different illustrations. Text in English. 14 folded leaves (28pp.) including the cover wrappers, numerous colour woodcut illustrations, bound Japanese-style with blue silk thread, 182 x 126mm. A near-fine copy of an exquisite book.
