New York , NY, U.S.A.: Hacker Art Books, 1979. This is a reprint of the book originally published in 1940; in his introduction Locke writes "The Negro's creative career in the fine arts is longer and more significant than is generally known, and the main objective of this portfolio is to document this pictorially for the wider knowledge of the general public;" the book is divided into three parts, The Negro as Artist, The Negro in Art, and The Ancestral Arts; each section includes critical commentary followed by black & white reproductions of paintings and sculpture and a biographical index of the artists (striking tan covers with portraits on the front & back; very slight edge wear; otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy in nearly perfect condition; in stock & available for immediate shipment from a reliable independent bookstore). Reprint. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 9 1/4" X 12 1/4".
