London: Archibald Constable and Co., Ltd., 1901. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 7 1/2" X 5. A beautiful 1/2 green morocco binding with green cloth boards and double gilt ruling to both boards. Five raised bands, each with ribbed gilt decoration, double boxed gilt design and gilt lettering to the spine. Top edge gilt, silk head & tail bands and green endpapers. In near fine condition with clean & fresh boards and square corners. A slight difference of colour to the spine, looking browner than greener but overall looking smart, tight and firm, an excellent example of a Morrell fine binding with their stamp to verso of rear endpaper. Internally clean and fresh with some spotting to fore edge, sometimes affecting pages, see photos. Also with 'Truslove & Hanson, Clifford Street, W' stamp to verso of front endpaper which I assume is where the book was sold. 318pp including one page of ads. 'Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923) was a novelist, poet, and essayist, better known for his romantic novel of the Middle Ages, The Forest Lovers (1898). He wrote other historical novels and various volumes of poetry including The Song of the Plow (1916)'.
