NY: Harper and Brothers. Very Good with no dust jacket; Boards worn, especially at head and foot of . spine, pages toned, genealogical notes about Pike on rear flyleaf.. 1879. First Edition. Hardcover. Brown beveled cloth with gilt ruling on front boards and title stamped in gilt on spine. A laudatory biography of the Massachusetts Puritan (1616-1706) , written by his descendant, who was a champion of civil and ecclesiastical liberty. For his pains in criticizing the Massachusetts General Court over its persecution of Quakers he was disenfranchised; for his resistance to dogmatic clergy he was excommunicated. He was later an influential civic leader, whose arguments helped halt the Salem Witchcraft trials and persecutions in 1692. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 237 pages .

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
