Engraved frontis., two engraved plates, & several engravings in the text. 12 p.l., 456 pp. Folio, cont. panelled calf (head of spine & corners a little worn, upper joint a little cracked at head & tail), red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: T. Woodward, 1726. First edition. The Rev. Laurence (1668-1732), Prebendary of Salisbury, devoted all his spare time to his garden and became very knowledgeable on gardening matters. We learn from ODNB that he was especially successful with pears. He wrote a series of noteworthy books on the subject, this being his most ambitious. Fine and crisp copy.
