NY, 1842.. Leather Bible in fair to acceptable condition. The dark brown leather cover is cracked and severely chipped at the base of the spine and edges. Cracks along the cover. The binding is still firm, though. The pages are quite worn and foxed. It has seen water damage, but no lingering smell remains, only discoloration. Many of the verses are underlined, some by pencil, some by pen. Civil War era leather New Testament Bible
There is a faded inscription on the ffep but much of it has been lost. The part that can be made out is "his spiritual improvement" and the initials K.J.G (pretty sure). There's a date of 26th Jan 1846, as well.
On page 72 (Mark VII-VII) there is a folded poem from "Burke's Weekly" called "The Little Girl and the Bird" by E.P.M. in Clarkesville, GA (see photos). A bit of research shows that "Burke's Weekly for Boys and Girls" was a periodical out of Macon, GA between 1868-1870. The reverse of the poem includes another poem called "The Little Doves." with no author attribution. It also includes a portion of "Jack Dobell; Or, A Boys Adventures in Texas" (Chapter IV).
There is also a newspaper clipping on page 179 that includes a poem that appears to be based on Mark viii: 36. On the back is an article about activity during the Civil War; mentions Rapid Ann and Rappahannock, Kilpatrick, Drury's Bluff, General Lee and lauds the recent victories from the South.
Page 224 has a small lock of brown hair.
Page 288-299 includes a rather large hank of light brown hair, no names or notation given. On page 288, there is in pencil a date of 1-18-98.
Lastly, on page 304 is set in a clipping from "The Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion", a periodical from the 1850s, with an image on one side and a portion of a poem on the other side called "The Dying Child. A truth" by Miss Charlotte Allen.
Page 316 "A Cholera Remedy of Some Repute" clipping, quite a doozy of a recipe that includes Opium, Brandy, and more. On the back are some adverts. Appears to be from SC.
Page 370 includes a clipping of the Apostles Creed with variations. On the reverse is an opinion column and "From the Southern Christian Advocate. ROMANISM AGAIN"
Page 384 includes a clipping with a "simple remedy for diptheria" and some penciled words I can't quite suss out.
