These eight volumes compile together 168 rare news reports of "pioneers who epitomized the Western spirit. Their reports are the early West in microcosm, the frontier passing in review. The articles represent the types of published information that shaped the views of the American people about the West from 1803 to 1865, from the Louisiana Purchase to the end of the Civil War and the building of the Pacific Railroad" (Per "Introduction" p. 7, Vol. 1).
