Well illustrated with vintage photos, portraits, maps, etc. Coulter 395: "a work of unusual excellence from painstaking researches among his comrades' diaries and papers, historical documents, and his own enriched memory… [Alfred Seelye] Roe [1844-1917] enlisted in 1862… and was soon in Washington where he and his comrades spent considerable time guarding the city. In the spring of 1864 he joined Grant's march on Richmond. When Early made his famous raid on Washington, Roe was among the forces sent by Grant to save the city. Thereafter he operated in the Shenandoah Valley until… he was transferred back to Petersburg. After Lee's surrender, he went on the raid to Danville…" Nevins 153: "reflects painstaking research and skillful presentation." Dornbusch 40.
