VERY GOOD+ copy, clean and tightly bound copy in hardcover of marbled paper over boards with reddish-brown cloth spine and corners. Custom bookplate affixed to front pasted endpaper (a skull with initials PMF on forehead); 2 small clippings, as from a catalog listing, pasted to front free endpaper; lightly penciled and easily erasable listing of illustration page numbers on reverse of title page verso. Pages crisp, clean and near fine. Top edge gilt. 13 full-page black and white illustration plates plus 47 woodcuts by Thomas and John Bewick and their pupils. Cover is clean, lightly shelf rubbed but no frays or tears. Binding and hinges firm, intact and straight. A fascinating tour of England's north country, with articles and sketches on the country and culture including famous families, cities and towns, natural history, mining and miners; historic executions; ghosts, charms and omens; hunting; rails and roads; churches, schools, and much more. 5-3/4 x 8-3/4"; vii + 400 pages..
