Northanger Abbey and Persuasion
by Jane Austen
With "Biographical notice of the author" by Henry Thomas Austen
London: John Murray, Albemarle St., 1818, in four volumes, first editions.
Each volume printed: "T. Davison, Lombard Street, Whitefriars, London" at bottom of verso of title page and final page of text, after "The End".
Jane Austen is perhaps best known as the author of Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are the last two out of six of Jane Austen's published works. Northanger Abbey was Austen's first written novel and Persuasion the last.
Volume 1: xxiv, including "Advertisement by the Authoress" an "Postscript". Two blank leaves, title page which is prior to what is usually called the half-title page. All four vols. are thus bound in this uncommon manner, i.e., the half-title page (short version of title and vol. number) does not precede the title page. See images. 300 pages, followed by two blank pages. Pages 190 and 191 misnumbered as 191 and 190.
Volume 2: two blanks, title, half-title, 331 pages, followed by two blanks.
Volume 3: two blanks, title, half-title, 280 pages, followed by two blanks.
Volume 4: two blanks, title, half-title, 308 pages, followed by two blanks.
3/4 leather with marbled boards, gilt titles on applied red leather labels, double lines and decorative devices. 8mo.
Very good, with uneven rubbing to the marbled boards and edges, external hinges of spines show tiny chips and wear, without separation. Top and bottom of text block slightly trimmed, foredge marbling faded. Former owner and bookseller pencil marks to front endpapers of vol. 1. Bookplate of Rt. Honorable Lord Gray, engraved by Lizars to pastedown of each vol. Inner hinges show minute cracks, with no separations; all gatherings very tight. Light tanning to pages; no interior foxing. Endpapers show only the mildest foxing. Marroon cloth slipcase is modern, has corner bumps, minor edge wear.

Description:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
