London: Richard Bentley, 1833 A very good copy of the first illustrated and popular edition of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion in one volume. Issued as part of the Standard Novels series. This is the first issue, numbered XVIII in the series, retaining the series half title, and is the second edition of the works overall. It has been newly rebound in a half leather binding with gilt-lined raised bands, title label and gilt author and date details to spine. Boards are marbled. New endpapers with bookplate of Coker Court and signature of W H Helyar of Coker Court, Yeovil, relaid on the front pastedown. Contents: Standard Novels half title with advert for The Smuggler to verso; frontispiece; vignette title page; plain title page to Northanger Abbey dated 1833; text pp 1-212; title page to Persuasion; text pp 215-440. The binding is in fine condition. Contents in very good clean condition. There is occasional spotting to the top margins; a couple of brown marks in the gutter in Northanger Abbey; and 2 small repaired side edge tears to pp 193 and 195. Frontispiece and vignette title are lightly toned (as usual) and tissue guard has been replaced.

A very good, clean, tight and bright copy bound in original publisher's red leather profusely gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. Upper edge dyed red. No inscriptions. Internally very clean and fresh looking. A couple of slight rub marks to each corner at the head of the spine and a slight colour change to the leather at the head of the spine. Over all, a well preserved copy.
