About This Item
First edition, hardcover, Boston, 1839. Original decorative cloth boards. Condition is Good: primary condition issue is moderate to heavy foxing throughout. No interior writing, marks, folds or vandalism. Binding is somewhat cocked. Front hinge is starting but should do fine with normal use. Maps are tissue paper with small tears at top of hinge not affecting maps in any way. Has cool but incomprehensible Icelandic chart of the world. Paginates: xii, 364, with two unpaginated folding maps, lacking all blanks. Please see images of the book you will receive. Howes S641, Field 1451. Notes: Washington Irving is generally credited for the 'Columbus discovered America' myth based upon his 1828 biography of Columbus. This book, published in 1839, is one attempt to refute the idea. Author is making a sincere attempt to document prior European explorations. His excellent work is hindered by presentation in the form of a dialog. For other early efforts to document European travels to America prior to 1492 please see Kerr's "History of Voyages and Travels" (1811), Hakluyt's "Voyages of the English Nation to America" (1599) and others. Feel free to inquire.
