About This Item

Set of six manuscript Norton Allen maps, hand drawn in ink and signed by Allen. These maps were commissioned by Desert Magazine between 1940 and 1952. Each map looks to be first drawn with pencil and then with ink; some pencil markings can still be seen. Each map sheet has a few corrections by the printer in white-out pencil, and notes in pencil or ink stipulating the size of the map when printed in the magazine (usually 44 picas). Most map sheets have a Desert Magazine stamp, a date or notes written on verso. Maps are in good to very good condition. The map of Massacre Cave is the most worn; the map was folded in half and has a large crease down the middle and a 1 inch tear along the middle crease. There is also a 1 inch tear along the bottom edge near the artist’s name and minor chipping to the top left corner. The map of Pozo Verde has two hole punches on the bottom edge (not affecting content). The other four maps have light creasing to corners and light soiling. Norton Allen (1909–1997) was a stellar draftsman and mapmaker, creating hundreds of custom maps primarily for Desert Magazine. He was also an amateur archaeologist primarily working in California, Arizona and southern Utah during the winter seasons alongside his partner Ethel and father Ernest. Allen's distinctive maps became a popular feature of Desert Magazine and are extremely rare to see in commerce today. Maps include: 1) Massacre Cave (Canyon de Chelly area): February 1940 issue of Desert Magazine, 9 ¼ x 15 ¼ inches 2) Ganado (Arizona): November 1944 issue of Desert Magazine (for article, War Dance of the Enemy Way), 8 ¼ x 15 ½ inches 3) Lupton (Arizona): March 1947 issue of Desert Magazine, 8 ¾ x 11 ¾ inches 4) Pozo Verde (Arizona/Sonora): July 1948 issue of Desert Magazine, 8 ½ x 14 ¼ inches 5) Standing Rocks (Arizona) : March 1949 issue of Desert Magazine, 8 1/3 x 12 inches 6) Todilto Park (New Mexico): April 1952 issue of Desert Magazine, 8 ½ x 15 inches .
