London : Macmillan and Co., Limited , 1908 A fair to good copy of the 1st edition in 2 volumes in original green cloth bindings with gilt titles to spine. Richard Spruce was a noted botanist, specialising in liverworts and mosses. He traveled to South America in 1847 and spent 15 years gathering and researching plant specimens and understanding the local environments and cultures. This work is taken from his travel diaries, edited and published after his death by Alfred Russel Wallace, whom he knew well. The drawings in the work are mostly from Richard Spruce's own sketches, with photographs added by Wallace from other colleagues and travellers to the area. The bindings in this copy are sound (Vol I slightly shaken) and clean with bright gilt to spines which are a little pulled. The cloth is faded to the bottom corners of both volumes. Contents overall very clean with occasional light spotting to the top margin and light marking to endpapers Vol II is lacking the single page map of the Central Andes of Ecuador. In detail - Vol I: half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; title and preliminaries pp lii; text pp 1-518 with 14 photographic plates, 1 full page drawing, 1 single page and 2 folding maps, and numerous illustrations in the text; 2pp publisher's list at the rear. The binding has a slight mark to the top of the front board. There is a very small repaired tear in the gutter of the illustration list. Vol II: half title; title and preliminaries pp xi; text pp 1-542 including glossary and index, with 7 photographic plates, 7 full page drawings, 1 single page (of 2) and 2 folding maps, and numerous illustrations in the text; 2 pp publisher's list at the rear. The binding has a small faded area to the back board close to the spine joint.
