Three reports providing much information on the American Southwest in the mid 1800s, as well as the Mexican American War. Includes illustrations, folding maps and scientific data. The three reports are: 1. "Report of Lieut. J. W. Abert, of His Examination of New Mexico, in the Years 1846-'47"; pp 1-416, 29 lithograph plates including a map, and 12 plates of flora. 2. "Report of Lieut. Col. P. St. George Cooke of His March from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to San Diego, Upper California", pp 549 - 563, 1 large folding map. 3. "Journal of Captain A. R. Johnston, First Dragoons", pp 567 - 614, illustrations & maps in text. The two folding maps are entitled, "Map of the Territory of New Mexico" & "Sketch of Part of the March & Wagon Road of Lt. Colonel Cooke, from Sante Fe to the Pacific Ocean, 1846-7". The first folding map torn, but complete. Tall 8vo, 614pp. Two folding maps, the first torn, but complete. Three quarter brown gilt leather and marbled boards. Tanning of the text pages, but the lithographic views in very good condition, some light browning on some of plates. Occasional cracks to the text block, but still very sturdy. With 43 plates, including 3 sketch maps. Howes E145. Wagner-Camp 148:2. Flake 3164. Emory's classic report describing terrain and rivers, cities and forts, pueblos and prehistoric ruins, plant and animal life, and Indians and Mexicans, primarily in New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California, with some mention of the Mormon Battalion.

Foxing, cloth chipped at spine ends and split along rear joint. Map in very good condition, with light toning along folds, a few small splits at intersections. Wagner-Camp 148: The country west of Santa Fe had been crossed by occasional herdsmen and trappers. H Emory was Brevet Major of the Corps of Topographical Engineers. His report was submitted to the Senate and the 30th Congress by the Secretary of War.
