Demy 4to; two blanks and publisher’s Note leaf with their blind stamp authenticating the volume precede photogravure frontispiece with loose tissue guard; half-title not called for; thirty-four plates printed in black or sepia, most with loose tissue guards; wood-engraved double-spread map in text; leaf bearing printer’s device and imprint on recto, blank on verso, followed by blank at end; pp.[viii]+188+[i]+[iii]; publisher’s quarter dark brown morocco-faced sheep, blocked and lettered gilt on spine, diagonally-fine-ribbed leaf-green cloth sides; t.e. gilt, others uncut. Leather of spine rubbed and with neat repair at tail, and boards worn at corners; interesting light pencilled notes on some few leaves, presumably by Rob^t. G. Sillar, whose ownership signature appears on the front end-paper; otherwise a fine copy on a finely produced volume. One of a few copies with India Proofs.Wise, 231: the first complete and first illustrated edition, 750 copies of which were issued in all, 650 copies of the ordinary edition at £1.11.6d. and 100 copies with India proofs of the plates at £2.2.0d., the present copy being one of the special copies with India proofs. A great deal of trouble was taken with the plates, which were produced by Messrs. Dawson and Co. by the then new process of photogravure, numerous negatives being taken of each in order to achieve the best effect, and some of the plates where the detail was very fine, being then worked on by hand by an engraver who had been employed on the production of some of the originals.
