NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY - The Wildlife of Upper Canada

by Sandercombe, W. Fraser

Condition: Very Good/Very Good

Erin, Ontario: The Boston Mills Press, 1985. 180 pp. Black boards lettered in gilt on the front panel and spine; headband; illustrated endpapers. Light wear at the corners of the dustjacket; aside from the author's signature, no interior markings. An interesting find, a copy of my own first book in a used book store in Bracebridge, Ontario. Illustrated by the author with more than 80 black and white drawings, the book is made up of quotes from old manuscripts, diaries, and letters that describe the flora and fauna discovered in Ontario by the early settlers, all strung together by accounts of the way things are now. Quill and Quire called it: " A book that is meant to make us feel guilty and good at the same time". The Contents are: Introduction; The Forest; The Birds: The Hunters; The Hunted; The Newcomers. The Fish: The Fisherman's Prime Desire; The Newcomers. The Forest Revisited: Why the Woods Went Away. The Mammals: Mainly for the Fur; Almost for the Fur; No One Gets Out Alive; Trophy Meat; Kill on Sight; and The Newcomers.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by W. Fraser Sandercombe;. 8vo. Author's First Book.
