Many languages of middle, northern, and eastern Europe use one or both "particles" NU and NÅ as discourse markers; it is in all Germanic languages ("now" in English) and most Slavic languages and has spread to neighboring but unrelated languages such as Hebrew, Finnish, Estonian, and Kazakh. Taking the particles as an example, linguists explore the nature of discourse markers, their range of use and meaning in different languages, and the borrow-ability of discourse markers. They also want to demonstrate how interactional linguistics inspired by conversation analysis can contribute to the cross-linguistic investigation of discourse markers and to the synchronic study of their grammaticization.
