About This Item

Very good set of 42 Roman landscapes in a rough binding of Venetian paper-covered boards.

In the early 19th century, Italian publishers rushed to bring out collections of views of Rome for the tourist market.

Engraved title page and 42 fine copperplate engravings of ancient Roman ruins and modern scenes drawn by Professor Silvestro Bossi and engraved on copper by Achille Parboni.

Views include the Temple of Vesta, Temple of Venus and Rome, Arch of Septimius Severus, Tomb of Cecilla Metella, Saint Peter's Square, Arch of Titus, Pantheon, Gate of San Sebastian, Piazza del Popolo, temples, Roman baths, theatres, bridges, triumphal arches, plazas, fountains, etc.

Silvestro Bossi was an Italian artist and printmaker active in the early part of the 19th century, specializing in landscapes of Rome and Naples.

Achille Parboni was an engraver active in the early 19th century in Rome along with Pietro Parboni (1783 - 1841). The Parbonis engraved many books of views of Italian scenery, landscapes in Rome, Sicily, and other popular tourist spots in Italy for the souvenir market.

Rare, only 2 copies located in WorldCat, one with 36 plates, and one with 53 plates (including some by G. Acquaroni).

Oblong quarto, hardback recovered in Venetian paper, interior mostly fresh with crisp impressions of the copperplate engravings on thick wove paper. A few spots outside the platemark, and a small blindstamp within each plate.
