This is the first of two volumes of the diaries of a provincial English businessman engaged in textiles, banking, and politics in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the diaries cover a span of nearly 50 years, and are a reflection of the industry, trade, and banking, the politiccs, and the social life of a relatively stable community in East Anglia; in a book-length introduction, the editor provides the background of the family, the local society, and the local economy, particularly the textile industry; includes a frontispiece portrait of the author, as well as many other illustrations, and genealogical tables of the author's family; survey map of the town in 1776 on the end papers (olive textured cloth with gold lettering, end of spine and one corner slightly bumped; illustrated blue dust jacket has tear on back edge, enclosed in clear mylar cover; otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy).
