Description:
London: Printed For J.Murray, 1773., 1773. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., xxii, 312. with half-title. A nice copy in modern quarter calf over contemporary marbled bds. (covers rubbed, marginal browning to outer leaves). Second Enlarged Edition. An important early exercise in modern sociological inquiry and comparative anthropology. The work, which shows the influence of Montesquieu and David Hume, contains a study of primitive society, and the first third of the book is devoted to the study of the rank and condition of women through the ages. It is "remarkable for its anticipation of the views of more recent writers. The prescience of his views on gynaecocracy, or that stage of social development wherein, through kinship counting from the mother, the position of woman is most important, is borne witness to by J.F.Maclennan, in his Studies in Ancient History.". (Palgrave) The last chapter deals with slavery, which Millar opposed. Millar was professor of law at the University of Glasgow and a close friendf of Adam… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by W. and J. Richardson, for John Murray,, 1771. Among the earliest works of empirical sociology First edition of Millar's most important work, one of the earliest and finest examples of an empirical approach to sociology. "Of a remarkably liberal tone, Millar's study of social rank covers class distinction, the history and condition of women, primitive society, and the relationship between parent and child, and master and servant" (German, p. 67). The influence of Montesquieu and, particularly, of Hume's The Populousness of Ancient Nations is evident. Millar was a supporter of the American cause and an opponent of slavery; both feature in the final chapter, "Of the condition of servants in different parts of the world". Born in Lanarkshire the son of the local minister, Millar (1735-1801) "studied law at Glasgow, where he was an intimate of James Watt (1736-1819), the inventor of the steam engine, and where he attended the lectures of Adam Smith. After completion of his studies,… Read More
