"OBSERVATIONS IN THE EAST" by John P. Durbin. 1847; Harper & Brothers; New York. Complete in 2 volumes. "Chiefly in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor." The books feature both in-text and full-page engravings as well as maps (some are fold-out). Each book comes wrapped in a scarce, original, protective paper "self-fitting book cover" provided by Elias Barr & Co. Booksellers & Stationers ("Any book purchased of Elias Barr & Co. at retail, will be furnished with this cover free of charge"). The paper wraps have a metal strip along the spine and across the center to help secure them to the book covers - truly rare that these covers have survived!
Condition:
VOL I: cloth tear at the top-right corner of the front cover; damage to the top edge of the spine. The pages have foxing throughout and a name written in pen at the top edge of the title page. VOL II: 1" cloth tear at the top-left edge of the spine; the top of the spine is worn; foxing throughout; name written in pen at the top edge of the title page. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. NOTE: both books come with a protective paper cover wrap provided by the original bookseller (Elias Barr & Co.)...both wraps are detached at the spine and have missing spine pieces. They have metal fasteners at the edges that allow them to be attached to and removed from the covers.
