About This Item

(London: Longmans, 1898, Silver Library Edition). Crown 8vo; original burgundy buckram lettered in gilt on spine; gilt-ruled upper cover; pp. viii + 342 + 32; frontis. with tissue guard; title page vignette; plates. Cloth a bit stippled; earlier owner's bookplate to front pastedown; some spotting to page edges and outer leaves. Very good condition. (Mendelssohn I, p. 578: 1st edition) "An earlier statesman, impressed by the ironies of his task, once wittily remarked that if you wish to be misled about a country you should consult the man who lives there and speaks the language. In 1874 Lord Carnarvon, anxious to know South Africa, took this aphorism to heart. He chose a man who had never seen South Africa, and who spoke only one of its many languages, to be first his eyes and ears in South Africa and eventually his mouth as well. For a long period of years James Anthony Froude had devoted his energy and his eloquence to the history which others had made. For a brief time in South Africa he brought those same gifts to bear on the history he made himself." - Malherbe: Eminent Victorians in South Africa, pp. 54-55 .
