The board edges have scuffing all about. Minor splitting to the hinges. There is a stray signature from 1878 that appears to be 'Liguard Hartirgson.' There is a stray number in pencil that can easily be removed from the inside board. Book is without any other marks or writings, pages are tone clean, and book is fairly tight and sturdy. THE BOOK APPEARS TO BE AN ALPHABETIZED DICTIONARY WITH ENGRAVINGS ON A FEW PAGES. "Foesius spent 40 years in the preparation of this concordance to Hippocrates. This work was unsurpassed until Littre's great work appeared 250 years later." Garrison-Morton 6793. Foesius (1528-95), studied medicine at Paris and returned to his native city of Metz to become a city physician. In addition to his medical duties and daily practice, he was a classical scholar who concentrated on the study of Hippocrates and his works. The fine medallion portrait of Foe on the verso fo the title-page was executed by the French engraver Pierre Woeiriot (ca. 1531-ca. 1589) and appears only in first editions of the book (ABE DEALER 2008). Text in Latin and Greek. Covers well rubbed but sound; old monastic rubberstamp to title-page, else very good. String ties perished.Former owner's name in ink on paste down next to a few bookseller notes in pencil. A truly classic series of medical texts that informed centuries of medicine. Includes the Greek text of famous Greek physician Hippocrates' Aphorismi, with the Latin translations by Foes and Plancy. Hippocrates is well-known as the first physician to believe diseases had physical, natural causes rather than supernatural ones. Galen's commentaries are in Plancy's Latin translation. Full cintemp. vellum, elaborately tooled in blind. All edges gauffered (with an elaborate floral design) but not gilt. Scuffing and wear to binding, esp. at edges, but still extremely sturdy. Some annotations in ink on blank preceding title; also some insect damage om endpaper and in margins of a few leaves. Moderate age-toning to some leaves. Engraved printer's device on title page, and again as colophon. Overall, very good. Very Good. (Subject: Early Printing).
