London: Printed for G.G. and J. Robinson, B. and J. Whilte, T. Cadell and W. Davies, W. Otridge and Son, J. Debrett, R. Faulder, and T. Egerton, 1795. Hardcover. Good condition. The first of 2 volumes of Washington's war time correspondence in the American Revolution, with letters from June 24, 1775 to December 29, 1776. Letters include the evacuation of Boston after Washington's successful placement of cannons on Dorchester Heights, and the Battle of Long Island and the British taking of New York. Volume concludes with letters dated December 27 and 29, 1776 which describe the famous crossing of the icy Delaware River: "... But the quantity of ice, made that night, impeded the passage of the boats so much, that it was three o'clock before the artillery could all be got over; and near four, before the troops took up their line of march. This made be despair of surprising the town, as I well knew we could not reach it before the day was fairly broke" (p360). With the additional title page which reads, "American State Papers, being a collection of Original and Authentic Documents Relative to the war between the United Stated and Great Britain". 8vo, viii, 364 pp. Original gilt leather boards, the front board detached but present, corners rubbed, the spine worn; pages mostly bright and clean. (Left as is for the possibility of binding in a similar fashion an odd second volume). Howes W-142.
