Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1900. 1st Edition . Very Good Plus. 11.5 x 15.5 inches (29.5 x 39.5 cm). Very fine half red morocco binding with marbled boards. Spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering and gilt ornaments to compartments. Leather to boards has a gilt ruled and blind tooled edge. Top page edge gilt other edges untrimmed, marbled endpapers. Two stamps to verso of title page (Cheltenham College of Art), a few light spots of foxing, otherwise in very clean condition throughout. Original cloth from boards (bearing the City of Glasgow crest) has been mounted and bound in at the rear of the book. The expanded photogravure edition - this edition was issued in two versions: As 'Old Closes and Streets a Series of Photogravures 1868-1899' (Bearing the Annan imprint) an edition of 100 copies printed solely for the Corporation of Glasgow; and also as 'The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow' (bearing the MacLehose imprint) an edition of 150 copies printed for sale to the public. A groundbreaking work of photojournalism, in 1868 Annan was commissioned to document the Glasgow slums prior to their demolition. Originally published in 1872 with albumen prints (an edition of only 4 copies) followed a second edition (60 copies) in 1877 using the carbon print process. This expanded 1900 edition has high quality photogravure plates and includes 12 additional photographs taken between 1885 and 1899 plus an old print of Trongate. An important landmark in social documentary photography, this example is in excellent condition and presented in a very attractive leather binding. . Overall condition is Very Good Plus. Navy blue hardback cloth cover. 390mm x 290mm (15" x 11"). [53pp]. 50 plates. Annan printed this album in three editions in 1871, 1877, and 1900 respectively according to Fisher. The 1871 process was calotype, 1877, carbon, and 1900 a gravure process. The City Improvement Trust was the body which was charged with the task of cleaning up the squalid living conditions that existed in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century. Learning from visits to Paris, to see the work of Baron Haussmann, the trustees were very successful in adapting the traditional tenement house style to rehouse many thousands of people. This edition was limited to 100 copies. .

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
