Hardback with a brown, yellow and green pictorial dust jacket, now in mylar. The jacket shows heavy wear with several edge tears and creases and is NOT price-clipped. The burgundy cloth binding has some pale spotting. SIGNED by the author on the special "Sea Islands Edition" leaf. Stated First Edition. From the jacket, "The reader is transported into another world-- one of the tiny, self-sufficiant Sea Islands off South Carolina, populated chiefly by Gullah blacks who call themselves Whooping Island Livers. Whooping Island got its name from Old Mitt's husband's grandpappy-- Old hermt Crab. When Old Hermit Crab's shanty was overrun with pickaninnies nd his old woman t to slinging the frying pan at him, he moved over to the other side of the Whisking Boo creek, over pantap Big Bull side...." Written in the rural dialect of the region of coastal South Carolina.
