Scribner's "A" on copyright/colophon page, light blue cloth-covered boards with silver gilt spine lettering; dustjacket with "$3.00" price prrinted on front flap and no mention of Nobel Prize. "Jacket design by A" printed on lower front flap and Lee Samuel's name printed on lower right corner of rear panel photograph of Hemingway. Faint beginning foxing on the upper board edges and on text top edge, minor over-extension between half-title page and previous page listing books by Hemingway, offsetting on pp 46 and 47; dustjacket with tiniest nick on the front panel top edge, shallow short crease on front flap and short closed tear at upper flap fold (neither immediately apparent), and beginning extremity toning, mostly on the interior. Altogether, a bright, lovely well-preserved copy in Very Good condition in a Very Good dustjacket with an archival mylar cover.. Hardcovers. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.

Copy 242 of an edition of 680 and signed on the colophon by Coleman O. Parsons who wrote an extensive Foreword for this edition. Frontispiece is a fanciful lion with spread claws, printed in red.
