About This Item

New York: White and Allen, no date (1889). 1889. Hardcover. Blue and brown pictorial bevel edge cloth, front cover stamped in black and gilt, all edges gilt. pp [42], unpaged, blank leaf at front and rear. Good illustrations on every page of text, 3 in colour on pasted-in labels, 2 pp of music at rear. Spine lightly darkened; rubbing, slight wear to spine ends and outer corners; a couple small marks on rear cover; else a VG clean and unworn copy. First edition with these illustrations, the classic song by Stephen Foster, a minstrel show standard. Uncle Ned was a good old darky (and slave) and a fair fiddle player, but now "No more hard work for poor old Ned, He's gone whar de good Niggas go." Even kindly old Massa, the slave keeper, shed tears. A decent copy of a scarce and attractive book. ; Squarish octavo .
