All volumes bound in red with black and gilt decoration and lettering with gilt upper text-block edges and have sunned spines and have bumped and lightly worn spine-ends and corners. Each has two small previous owner's bookplates on the inside of the front cover (Giles Shaw and Tricia Perks). Paper over internal hinges is split showing webbing on many hinges but covers are firmly attached and internal binding is sound. All volumes have black and white frontis, vignette title and additional black and white plates, inset illustrations, decorated headers and capitals. Volume I and II published in 1881, Volume III (split in cloth over lower quarter of rear joint) published in 1882, Volume IV (plate of Charlotte Bronte and associated protective tissue leaf, between pages 124 and 125, are detached) published in 1883, Volume V (split in cloth over upper two thirds of rear joint leading to partial split across spine) published in 1884.
