A rather grand production of the life of the controversial British figure regarded by some as a military dictator and by others as a champion of liberty. Printed by Goupil, with plates engraved by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyat & Co. with handsome portrait chapter headings and initial capitals. A limited edition, no. 144, limited to 1475 copies. Bound by Birdsall for Charles Scribner's Sons, the full maroon crushed morocco with gilt raised bands and tooling to the panels, boards and dentelles. Profusely illustrated history with tissue guarded engravings.
Small folio, 13" tall. Color frontispiece portrait of Cromwell, (v), 216pp, 44 plates with the original spine for the paper wrapper laid in at the rear, top edge gilt, others uncut. Illustrated throughout including a fine color frontispiece portrait.
Scattered fox spotting throughout, hinges starting. OCLC: 228773582.
