At once literate and literary,'Op. Non Cit.' comprises four novellas linked by a common theme, the Jew in the non-Jewish world. The novellas move in time through the last four centuries, and in space from the Venice ghetto to contemporary New York, via a Somerset village and the mid-Atlantic,aboard the SS Arizona. The characters include an unnamed but familiar Venetian,a young Romantic poet and Mr Oscar Wilde. Isler's tales share that distinctive blend of high comedy and dark tragedy,of grotesquerie, hilarity and sorrow, that characterises his acclaimed novels 'The Prince of West End Avenue' and 'Kraven Images',but this time there is an added pleasure: the sudden recognition of the 'works not cited'.In each tale Isler has buried allusions to other more familiar stories which, once recognised, enhance the delight of reading a master craftsman at the height of his powers. Alan Islaer was born in London in 1934.His first novel 'The Prince of West End Avenue',was acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. In America it won the National Jewish Book Award and was one of the five fiction nominees for the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award. In Britain it won the Jewish Quarterly Fiction Award. His second novel,'Kraven Images',was published in 1996. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
