About This Item
City of Norwich Conservative Assoc, Norwich, 1952. First Edition. Card Covers. Very Good/N/A. the history of the conservative party in Norwich written by their agent & published in June, 1952; b/w. pictures of the then prime minister - Winston S. Churchill & a few other notable conservatives; "few cities have had a more colourful political history than Norwich. The serious-minded citizens have always been greatly interested in the affairs of the day, and this interest has been reflected in the ferocity of the political campaigns in the past. The years between the Election of Adam de Toftes and John le Graunt as the first Members of Parliament for Norwich, in 1272, and the return of Henry Strauss, in 1951, have seen much political activity in our great City. It is interesting to note that the first recorded use of the Ballet Box in England, and probably in the world, was in Norwich in 1415. This booklet is the history of the Conservative Party, and the word 'Conservative' was first used locally in a political sense in 1831. This was in the famous Norfolk Declaration issued during the Reform Bill controversy. It is hoped that this story of the Conservative Party will be of some interest to Norwich citizens, who take a pride in the history of their City. Politics to-day are not so colourful as they were in the last century nor, indeed, so corrupt. It is, fortunately, no longer the duty of a Conservative Agent to go round the pubs on Polling Day with a bag of gold!"; 52 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1.
