Peter Martyr d'Anghiera (1457-1526) was an Italian historian in the service of Spain in the early 16th century. He published his first account of Spanish discoveries in 1511 and included information on Columbus and other explorers. He also described the voyages of Cortes and Magellan, as well as accounts of Florida and Native Americans captured in what is now South Carolina. Another section, or "Decade" covers Davilia's discoveries along the west coast of North America in the 1520s. He published the eight "Decades" between 1511 and 1525. All eight Decades were published together in 1530, and several other editions in other European languages were published later in the 16th century. Parts were published in English in the 19th century, and Francis MacNutt published his translation from the Latin first in 1912.
