Montgomery, 1860. unbound. Scarce Montgomery, Alabama, Capital of the Confederacy, original Executive Appointment Document by Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Measures 10 x 16.25 inches. "Know ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Ability and Punctuality of ___________ I do appoint ___________ and do authorize and empower him to fulfill the duties of that Office, according to Law: AND TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said Office, with all the powers, privileges, and emoluments to the same of right appertaining unto him, the said ___________ until expiration of this Provisional Government. In testimony whereof, I have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the Confederate States to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand, at the City of Montgomery, the ___________ day of ___________ in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty. BY THE PRESIDENT: ___________ Secretary of State ___________ . Accompanied by the original sky-blue official business envelope emblazoned with "Confederate States of America, PRESIDENTS OFFICE. (Official Business)." The document was folded to fit inside a small envelope. Very good condition; the envelope is near fine with faint adhesive remnants on the back. The first Capital of the Confederacy was Montgomery, Alabama, lasting from February to May of 1861. Jefferson Davis agreed to move the Capital to Richmond, Virginia as a condition for Virginia's secession from the Union.
