Ray Ryland with very best wishes J [?] M[?] Louis.' Merton used his monastic name Louis after his ordination in 1949. One of Merton's most personal books, 'Original Child Bomb' is a series of meditations on the atom bomb, with ink watercolors by Merton. The experimental prose and abstract art never won the book many followers, and it has become one of Merton's rarest titles. It was, nevertheless, one of the books he was most fond of, and sent to friends, as this personal copy attests. Fr. Ray Ryland taught at the University of the South at Sewanee and Franciscan University of Steubenville, and was friends with Merton, visiting him in Kentucky. A piece of history. The Title page states "Original Child Bomb points for meditation to be scratched on the walls of a cave." Thomas Merton. The Type face is News Gothic Bold.8000 copies were printed for New Directions by Century Letter Company in December, 1961. 500 copies were bound in Fabriano paper and signed by the author, Thomas Merton in blue ink, as always his signature is distinct and tiny! 2 inch tear to the bottom of the spine end, very scarce signed. The title is pasted on in white paper over the black cloth boards of the front cover and in similar fashion, A New Directions Book: $7.50 on the top of the rear cover.. No spine lettering..

(n.p.): (New Directions). (1962). One of 8000 copies in wrappers of Merton's meditation on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Inscribed by Merton: "For Doris/ from Tom." Doris Dana and Merton met in 1966, having been introduced by Dana's godfather, Jacques Maritain. Dana visited Merton at the Gethsemani monastery twice in 1967, and the two maintained a correspondence until Merton died in December, 1968. Foxing to covers, and a creased bump to the spine crown; very good in wrappers. Mailing label from the Abbey of Gethsemani, made out to Dana in Merton's hand is included. There was a signed limited edition of this title done -- 500 copies -- which is uncommon now; signed copies of the trade edition are considerably scarcer, especially with a good association as this one has.
