[ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING OF UNIDENTIFIED FIERCELY MOUSTACHED MALE, IN PROFILE]

by Horton, William Thomas

  • Used
[Np, but likely Redhill or London], 1910. Oil on canvas, 34.5 x 18 cm. Varnished. Canvas a trace frayed and soiled at right edge, with some slight surface cracking to varnish from old creases, but generally in good state. Matted (mat a bit dust smudged). A left profile portrait of an unidentified virtually forehead-less, broadly moustached male, with eyebrows to match, in either a clerical or military collar. An earlier pencil note speculates the subject may be a caricature of the Kaiser. Unsigned. Horton (1864-1919) is best known for his book illustrations (particularly those rendered in black & white) and his allegorical work, THE WAY OF A SOUL. He contributed to THE SAVOY, and maintained a long, if occasionally strained friendship with W.B. Yeats, who introduced him as a member to the Order of the Golden Dawn. Although initiated into the Order, Horton felt membership inimical to his deeply ingrained Christianity and he resigned shortly thereafter, confining his association to a lesser known group, "The Brotherhood of the New Life." His talents, in comparison to some of his better known contemporaries and analogues, such as Beardsley, were undeniably of a secondary stature; however, his commitment to his art as a means of rendering into visible form his spiritual concerns, as well as his associations with Yeats, Gregory, H. Rider Haggard and Beardsley, guarantee for him a place of some note in the period's history. Yeats wrote an appreciative, if cautious, introduction to his A BOOK OF IMAGES (London: The Unicorn Press, 1898), and reserved for him prominent places in both the Epilogue ("All Soul's Night") and Dedication ("To Vestigia") to A VISION. Roger Ingpen's WILLIAM THOMAS HORTON (1864 - 1919) A SELECTION OF HIS WORK WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (1929) and George Mills Harper's W. B. YEATS AND W.T. HORTON: THE RECORD OF AN OCCULT FRIENDSHIP (1980) remain the most substantial treatments of his life and work.

[Np, ca. 1917].. Approximately 22 x 11 cm, in contemporary mat (the latter 35.5 x 25 cm). Mat edgeworn and somewhat dust darkened, with a few minor spots, but generally very good. A charming period drawing, inscribed as a gift to his model, Hildegarde Hirsch on the mat: "To Hildegarde on her sixteenth birthday. Rockwell." There is also a small 'H' in the lower right foreground of the image in his hand. Hildegarde Hirsch was a performer with the Ziegfeld Follies, and was both Kent's model and his lover. "The reference to 'sixteenth' birthday is facetious, as there is evidence that she was in her 20s when they met and may have been married and separated prior to the relationship with RK" - Stanley, REDISCOVERING ROCKWELL KENT. The drawing was published, without color, in the November 1917 issue of VANITY FAIR, and this original was included in the 1997 Grolier Club exhibition. GROLIER (STANLEY) 9.

[Probably Big Sur, CA.], no date.. Original watercolor on paper, 19.5 x 21cm, matted. Not examined out of mount, but visible portions a trace tanned, otherwise near fine. A characteristic watercolor, likely painted during the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are shades of blue and black. The painting depicts a male and a female figure, in a bathtub, exposed from mid- chest up. Not signed by Miller, but inscribed by his friend Emil White, who functioned during his Big Sur residence (1944-62) as his aide/secretary in correspondence with painting customers and the public: "This was painted but not signed by H.M. Subject is Dejah Thoris, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Princess of Mars, who appeared most saliently in five Burroughs novels as the love interest of John Carter. A close-up full-body rendering of a pangolin next to a waterhole, with a suggestion of its focusing on its own reflection in the water.
