New York: James Van Der Zee G.G.G. Photo Studio, Inc, 1949. Unbound. Near Fine. Original sepia-toned gelatin silver portrait photograph of Harry Stote by James Van Der Zee. Image size 8" x 10". Signed in the plate "Van Der Zee, N.Y.C. 1949", stamped thrice with the photographer's "G.G.G. Photo Studio" rubberstamp on the back of the photo. A portrait of a well-dressed elderly African-American man seated and facing the camera, holding a large cigar. Generally in near fine condition with a small crease on the bottom left corner where it was probably held by an old corner mount and a tiny tear on one margin. Handwritten notes on verso state: "Harry Stote - violin in 70s. Clef Club musical - couldn't read on violin" (by which we assume is meant that he played the violin but didn't read music). We could find little or nothing about Stote and speculate that the name could be spelled wrong. A nice image by Van Der Zee, larger than most we've seen.
