Undated. 2 x 4 inches. Light traces of former mounting in an album. Annotated on verso in pencil in a Victorian hand: ‘Professor of Chinese, University College’. Samuel Kidd (1804-43), missionary and professor of Chinese at University College, London, arrived at Malacca in November 1825. Under the direction of the Rev.David Collie he made rapid progress in the study of Chinese, and was appointed professor of Chinese at the Anglo-Chinese College of Malacca.
