1975. Gorey, Edward. Watercolor on paper. Image area measures approximately 8 by 11 1/2 inches. Matted and framed. This illustration was used on the cover of the May 19th, 1975 edition of Publisher's Weekly, which featured an article on the 1975 American Booksellers Association Convention. The scene shows a typical Gorey character with enormous golden wings proclaiming "ABA 75" upon them in red. The mustachioed man, dressed in slacks, a tweed sportcoat, yellow sweater and green bow-tie, hovers bat-like over a small crowd of characters wielding books, each of whom has a speech-bubble pitch above them. The faded burlesque dancer in a diaphanous flapper-style dress, feather headdress, and festooned with beads holds up her "Follies of the Follies" and explains that "I still have all my costumes to wear to book-and-author luncheons." Next to her, a small boy pitches his "exposé of group activities in an Eastchester kindergarten" entitled "Plasticine & Clothes Pins." A barefoot, bearded beach-bum in a poncho, an apron-wearing aspiring cookbook author, and a man in a plaid 3-piece leisure suit round out this assembly. Some of the details here suggest that Gorey, who was no stranger to book-related events such as this, may have attended this convention. Writing in the June 16th, 1975 issue of the New Yorker, Lillian Ross observed that "All over the convention, the word used for people whose names appeared on the covers of books was 'author' (never 'writer')." Further on, she noted the presence of "two dozen publishers who were beating the drum for cookbooks," and she likened the experience of walking the aisles to "walking an old Coney Island path between sideshow hawkers." Gorey adhered a small paste-over correction to the leg of one of the characters, revealing insight into the artist's process. A fine, colorful example of Gorey's commercial work that is especially appealing for its book-oriented content.

Description:
This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet," "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears," "Whitetail: King of the Forest," "The Three Puppies," "The Small One," "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," "The Bluebird," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Enchantment of Santa Claus," "The Christ Child," "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens," "Polly Parrot," "Piccolino," "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko," written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book, from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages (front board graphic, frontispiece, pages 21 and 31). Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards, most with typeset text blocks,… Read More

Description:
1947. Oil on canvas by Cummings, who did not title his paintings; the title given here is purely descriptive. 18" x 24". "By E.E. Cummings" written on the wood frame, apparently in another's hand. Cummings signed only a small fraction of his work, deliberately and for philosophical reasons: he believed the work should stand on its own -- and be judged on its own merits or faults -- rather than be judged by who the creator of it was. When he backed away from the New York art scene in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Cummings was backing away from what he considered to be an artistic milieu driven by personality and ego rather than by art. After his early period as an abstract artist, he focused on representational art for the rest of his life, but often -- as in this painting -- he used a palette and a style that owed much to his early influences among modern artists: Cezanne, Matisse, and the Fauvists. One tack missing from the top of the stretched canvas; else fine. No Binding. Near Fine.
