[Japan n.d. ca 1880]. A single print, board mounted, 24 x 18 cm., color woodblock printed, artist cinnabar seal, surface bit dusty, interesting subject. Suitable for framing & disp- lay, a good luck symbol used during the New Years festival. Corners with minute wear. This shows a red-head white Japan- ese crane flying before a red half-sun. It is symbolistic of good luck, and often the symbol used during New Years cele- brations, and on wedding Kimono for centuries in Japan. Done by Bairei [1844-95], a Japanese-style painter who lived in Kyoto. He was the first pupil of the Maruyama painter, Naka- jima Raisho, later to become a Shijo artist under Shiokawa Bunrin and later a follower of the Nanga school. * His style is full of strong brush strokes, traditional charm & sensitivity. He was especially adept at drawing and illus- trating birds and flowers in the Kacho style. [Tokyo ca. 1880]. A single Oban sheet, 23 x 35 cm., color woodblock printed, a tiny mend to upper right corner from the back, ine the margin, image unaffected, else a very nice example. This print shows a pair of cranes standing in water, with colored flowers & a climbing plant in the foreground. Execu- ted in his distinctive style Bairei was the master of birds of all kinds and did many prints & albums showing them in a wide variety of settings. Ready for display & framing. .

This is book two of six in the series. Bairei was a member of the Ukiyo-e school and was a master of kacho-e painting depicting birds and flowers in the Meiji period of Japan. .

Japanese text followed by exquisite depictions of a variety of birds in their natural environment, not only those native to Japan, but also exotic birds. The illustrations are subtle colored woodblocks, esteemed for their beauty and realism. A very copy light soil and wear to the covers. .
