Japan: Tanaka, 1889. Original woodblock printed book by Kono Bairei. 25 illustrations printed in two or three colours. Bound concertina style, silk spine ends worn, paper covers and cord ties very good, with a little creasing to boards. Contents clean and tight, title page and list of contents in Japanese and English text. Each woodblock has a black boarder, number and title, back to back plates, fore-edge writing, unmarked, no inscriptions. A very good copy of this rare work by Bairei. NOTES [Kono Bairei was a Japanese painter, book illustrator, and art teacher. He was born and lived in Kyoto. [Japan n.d. ca 1880]. A single print, board mounted, 24 x 18 cm., color woodblock printed, artist cinnabar seal, surface bit dusty, interesting subject. Suitable for framing & disp- lay, a good luck symbol used during the New Years festival. Corners with minute wear. This shows a red-head white Japan- ese crane flying before a red half-sun. It is symbolistic of good luck, and often the symbol used during New Years cele- brations, and on wedding Kimono for centuries in Japan. Done by Bairei [1844-95], a Japanese-style painter who lived in Kyoto. He was the first pupil of the Maruyama painter, Naka- jima Raisho, later to become a Shijo artist under Shiokawa Bunrin and later a follower of the Nanga school. * His style is full of strong brush strokes, traditional charm & sensitivity. He was especially adept at drawing and illus- trating birds and flowers in the Kacho style.
