About This Item

London: Mark Gerson, 1961. Vintage oversize borderless portrait photograph of author Ian Fleming by photographer Mark Gerson, 1961, SIGNED by the photographer in white grease pencil on the lower right, with "London" written on the lower left, and with a "Mark Gerson, FIIP" National Union of Journalists photographer's stamp and a manuscript pencil annotation of "3/5 / MG" on the verso. A print of the photograph can be found in the holdings of the Photograph Collection of the National Portrait Gallery of London.

1961, the year of the portrait offered here, was a pivotal year for Fleming, having become the biggest selling crime writer in the US following US President John F. Kennedy's inclusion of Fleming's 1957 novel, "From Russia with Love," as one of his ten favorite books. It was also the year Fleming would sign a six month option on film rights to all of his published and future James Bond novels and stories to producer Harry Saltzman, as well as having suffering from a heart attack at the age of 53, which incurred him to write his only children's novel during his convalescence, "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang," which was published two months after his death, in 1964.

Mark Gerson is best known for his portraits of major twentieth century literary figures taken in the writers' homes. In a career spanning over 40 years, Gerson has photographed some of the most notable names in twentieth century literature including John Steinbeck, Roald Dahl, T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Evelyn Waugh, Doris Lessing, and Tom Stoppard, among many others.

12 x 16 inches. Very Good plus, with light edgewear and faint creasing overall, and a small closed tear on the right side center, with a cello tape repair on the verso.
