The Spaso-Nereditskaia Church, aka Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior, was built in 1198 by Prince Iaroslav Vladimirovich in his son's memory. The stunning frescoes, which decorated it, had been attributed to famous, 12-century artist and muralist Olisei Grechin. The first truly scientific restoration in Russia was performed on the church in 1903 - 1904, repairing the interior and the murals, which had held in almost perfect condition until the 20th century. It was heavily damaged during the Second World War and restored, again, in 1944. Various maintenance repairs continue to this day.
