Brown calico-grain cloth over boards; covers blind stamped with central mandorla in floral and strapwork frames; gilt stamped titles on spine; pale tan-yellow end papers; tissue-guarded frontispiece portraits of each speaker. Clean, square covers and spine; slight general fading; rear cover has light color damp staining at top fore corner - interior not affected; tightly bound; foxing of front and rear fly leaves and fo facing page of each; bright, clean interior; supple leaves. Spine cockeyed and holes wearing through the cloth along the edges. Corners rubbed through. Early owners' inscriptions and doodling on endpapers; one is dated 1858. Pages heavily foxed and many segments of pages coming loose, but still weakly attached. A heavily worn but readable copy. A debate on the merits of slavery from the mid-19th century.

Published for the Authors by J.B. Lippincott & Co., [1858]. 1st ed. 305pp. Portrait frontis., portrait. Orig. embossed cloth. Some wear to spine ends and corners, light speckling to cloth, a bit of light scattered foxing, else very good. Afro-Americana 1750. William Brownlow was a Methodist minister, newspaper publisher and post-war U.S. senator and governor of Tennessee . Brownlow was strongly pro-slavery in the 1850s. He gave a Scriptural defense of slavery in a speech delivered in Knoxville in 1857, and the following year, issued a challenge to Northern abolitionists to debate the issue. The challenge was initially accepted by Frederick Douglass but Brownlow refused to debate him because of his race.
